Set up a new SSD or hard drive

Try these steps in order. Stop if a step does not apply to your device or could risk important data.

  1. Install the drive and connect its cables, or insert the M.2 drive.
  2. On Windows, open Disk Management.
  3. Initialize the drive; use GPT for most modern PCs.
  4. Create a New Simple Volume.
  5. Assign a drive letter and format as NTFS.
More help: Select the correct new empty drive. Formatting the wrong drive can erase data.

Back up important files before repairs that may affect storage or system settings.
